Newborn Photography and Baby Acne: Why It’s Not a Big Deal on Picture Day

If you’re preparing for your newborn’s photography session and notice a few bumps or redness on their delicate skin, you’re not alone! Baby acne is a common concern for parents, especially on picture day. While it’s completely normal to feel a little worried, rest assured that it’s rarely a problem unless it’s causing discomfort for your baby. And as your photographer, I’ve got it all covered.

Understanding Baby Acne

Baby acne often appears as small red or white bumps on a baby’s cheeks, nose, or forehead. It can be triggered by a variety of factors, but the good news is that it’s temporary and typically harmless. If your baby seems comfortable and the acne isn’t irritating their skin, it’s more of a visual issue than anything else—and that’s where my expertise comes into play.

The Camera Captures Reality, But the Artist Creates Art

As a newborn photographer, my role goes far beyond clicking a button. I approach each session with a vision for your baby's portraits, and I treat every image as a canvas waiting to be transformed into a work of art. During the session, I capture your baby’s pure and natural beauty, and while things like baby acne might stand out in the raw image, the final product tells a different story.

I’ll walk you through my process using an example from a recent session. Below, you’ll see three key images:

The Close-Up:

In this photo, we see the baby’s acne up close. It’s normal and nothing to worry about. Parent's often come into the studio distraught, because baby's face seemingly erupted with infant acne overnight. Just in time for the newborn photo shoot. We always reassure parents that it is hardly a problem and we'll take care of it, not to worry one little bit.

The Original (Straight Out of Camera):

This is what I captured in the studio—a real, unedited glimpse of your baby. It’s a beautiful moment, but I know there’s more potential waiting to shine. Sometimes when we set up a shot, we have things in the edges of the frame that need to be removed. Often this is because baby has been more alert and we're trying to capture a moment before baby startles. In this case we have some clamps and foam posers to remove in addition to any skin retouching that is required for the baby acne and skin flakes.

The Final Art Piece:

After carefully refining the image, I turn it into a soft, timeless portrait. I use professional editing techniques that focus on enhancing your baby's natural features while gently minimizing temporary imperfections like acne. I've taken the image from that Straight from the Camera capture to the vision I had when I created the set up. Ready to be printed, framed and proudly displayed on the wall.

Your Baby As Art:

Each step of the way, I ensure that your baby’s personality and pure essence shine through, creating a final image that can be cherished for years. You may even want to display it as a piece of art on your wall, transforming a simple photo into a lasting family treasure.
